ROOT CANAL THERAPY

Root canal therapy is also known as endodontic treatment. As a dental procedure, it involves the removal of the damaged or diseased pulp or core of a tooth. Afterward, the root canals and the pulp chamber are filled and sealed. Although the pulpand root canals are vital for the growth and development of the tooth, a fully matured tooth can still survive without them.

WHY YOU NEED ROOT CANAL THERAPY?

A root canal therapy is necessary in situations where the pulp, which is a soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes infected or inflamed. Untreated pulp infection or inflammation causes excruciating pain and the formation of abscess. Common causes of root canal infection and inflammation are:

  • Deep decay
  • Cracks in the tooth
  • Repeated dental procedures
  • Injury to a tooth – even if it has no cracks

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE OF ROOT CANAL THERAPY?

A root canal therapy requires one or two sessions with an endodontist and involves the following procedure:

  1. Your endodontist will x-ray and examine the tooth. Then, a local anesthetic will be administered and when the tooth becomes numb, the endodontist will place a “dental dam,” which is basically a small protective sheet, over the area. The “dental dam” helps to keep the tooth clean and saliva-free during the procedure.
  2. The endodontist goes ahead to create an opening into the pulp through the crown. Using very small instruments, the pulp and root canals are cleaned and then shaped for filling.
  3. The cleaned and shaped space of the root canals is then filled with a rubber-like biocompatible material, known as gutta-percha. The endodontist uses an adhesive cement to place the gutta-percha, which ensures the root canals are sealed completely. To close the opening of the crown, the endodontist uses a temporary filling – which is eventually removed by your dentist during the restoration of the crown and after the root canals have healed.
  4. After your last visit with the endodontist, you’re required to get back to your dentist to have the tooth crown restored and reinstate its full function.
