HAVE DAMAGE OR

Missing Teeth?

DENTAL CROWNS & BRIDGES

Both bridges and crowns are prosthetic devices that are fixed where a tooth (or teeth) is missing. They are very different from removable devices like dentures because the bridges and crowns are cemented onto implants or existing natural teeth, and only a dentist can remove them.

WHY DO YOU

NEED A CROWN?

The idea behind a crown is to cap or cover a damaged tooth entirely. Check out some of the reasons why your dentist may recommend a crown:

  • Cover a dental implant
  • To attach a bridge
  • Protecting a weak tooth from fracturing
  • Cover a tooth after undertaking a root canal therapy
  • Cover a discolored tooth
  • Replace a poorly shaped tooth
  • Restoring a fractured tooth

WHEN DO YOU

NEED A BRIDGE?

Bridges are used for the replacement of one or more missing teeth. They are designed to span the entire space where the teeth are missing. These are the advantages of bridges:

  • They can be designed to match the color of your natural teeth
  • The patient needs only a few implants to attach the bridge
  • They cover gaps left by missing teeth, thus avoiding a bad bite
  • Can prevent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders that are usually caused by the imbalance of missing teeth

HOW IS

THE PROCEDURE DONE?

Replacing missing teeth with bridges and crowns is not rocket science. Instead, it involves a simple procedure as follows:

  1. You pay a visit to the dentist who in turn examines and resizes the tooth (or teeth) so that the bridge or crown can fit over it properly.
  2. Once the tooth (or teeth) has been reduced, the dentist takes an impression of the exact mold of the bridge or crown. If you prefer porcelain to be used, your dentist will decide the colour of the bridge or crown that best matches the colour of your natural teeth.
  3. The impression is then sent to a dental lab to make the bridge or crown using the material specified by your dentist. While your permanent bridge or crown is being made, your dentist may place a temporary one after preparing the tooth (or teeth).
  4. Once your permanent bridge to crown is ready, the dentist goes ahead to remove the temporary bridge or crown. The new one is cemented over your prepared tooth (or teeth) and you’re done!
